2011 Runner of the Year heads to Diné College

March 5, 2012

SHIPROCK — Last week the Diné College Cross Country program added one of the most decorated local runners to an already talented recruiting class for next year. Herbert Beyale III was recently selected as the Navajo Times Male Runner of the Year after capturing the New Mexico 3A State title this past fall with a time of 16:30. And this past Friday, he signed his official letter of intent to represent the Diné College Warriors as both a student and athlete next fall.

"Bringing a student-athlete like Herb to Diné College is a humbling experience for a coach. He, his family, his coaches, and his teachers have high hopes and expectations for Herb, both academically and athletically. Herb has the attitude and the talent to accomplish great things, and I see it as our job here at Diné College to make sure that he has the opportunity and support to reach all of those goals," said Diné College Head Cross Country Coach, Gavin Sosa.

As he heads into his Senior track season, Herbert already boasts impressive times, including personal bests in the 5K of 16:12, a 10:15 in the 3200, and a 4:41 in the 1600.

"What excites me about Herb as a runner is the way that he races. At the State Meet this past fall the weather was awful: cold, with 30+ mile an hour winds. Herb strategically drafted off the leader and pre-race favorite until the final 100 meters. Then he made his move, winning by a tenth of a second. Herb proved that he knows how to win when it counts most, and I find such patience and racing intelligence rare in young athletes," Coach Sosa continued.

Herb joins Kevin Gia from Zuni and Dustin Abeita from Thoreau as DC recruits from New Mexico. These three young runners raced multiple times this past fall as District rivals, including taking the top 3 places at their District Championship meet. In making his decision, Herb reached out to his former rivals to gather their input. In the end, he decided that Diné College was where he wanted to continue his development as a student and as an athlete.

"I couldn't be happier about the caliber of athletes that we have recruited this year. With Herb, Kevin and Dustin, as well as Charles Manymules and Justin Yazzie from Chinle, we bring in 5 top tier recruits. It's an exciting time to be a part of Diné College Cross Country,” said Sosa.

And now the recruiting focus turns to the women's side. "We have several excellent local athletes that we expect to sign in the coming days, so keep your eyes open!" concluded Sosa.
