2nd Annual Chuska Environmental Youth Camp

The Chuska Youth Environmental Camp is designed to offer youth entering grades 6-10 opportunities to learn and understand the ecological health of the Chuska Mountains on the Navajo Nation through an environmental education program that embeds scientific, cultural, and linguistic perspectives.

The camp curriculum is interdisciplinary and offers course work in earth and environmental sciences including soils, hydrology, geology, botany, wildlife biology, and mapping. Courses will be taught on the Diné College campus and diverse outdoor settings where students rely on observation, collecting samples, and interpreting data to learn more about the health of local streams, lakes, wetlands, and forests. The course material requires students to build basic skills in public speaking, writing, reading, and critical thinking.

The 2nd Annual Chuska Youth camp is a success. The volume of applicants was astounding. The interest was grand and we are proud to say that we were able to hold two separate camps this year, and provide the youth of our Nation the opportunity to engage and understand several areas of science that are useful on our tribal lands. Our investment into these areas are vital with the known fact that many jobs in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math areas on the reservation are becoming more available and they are important to the progress and sustainabliity of the Navajo Nation and its people. The campers getting acquainted with the situation.

The camp started off with an orientation describing what would be happening that week, an introduction to what sciences would be covered, and they were assigned day packs to hold their field notebooks and binder along with other matierials for notetaking in the classroom and out in the field. Each student introduced themselves and they got an idea of the variety of communities and backgrounds of which the student came from and where they go to school. The schools ranged from Bloomfield High, Chinle High, Farmington High, Navajo Preparatory High, St. Michael's High, Chinle Junior High, Tsaile Middle School, Tse Ho Tso Middle School, and Gallup Catholic School among others.

Students getting to know and trust each other. They also participated in team building skills. The students were divided into groups and given separate missions that encompassed their critical thinking, teamwork, communication and trust. The most exciting activity was the Acid River where two teams of students were instructed to race across an imaginary "acid river"with tools they were given to . The groups were given two cinder blocks, a rappelling rope, an 8 foot post, a six foot post, and a short fence post. The moderators chose a member of each team to a handicap, those being, a mute, person with no arms, and a blind person. Arnold Clifford - Botanist ExtraordinaireThe competition was fierce and fun, the kids had a blast and the air was filled with laughter.

The day's first speaker was Arnold Clifford and Felix Nez. Arnold is a Botanist from Teec Nos Pos, AZ, who, through his studies on the Navajo Nation, has discovered many new plants species. Arnold introduces the students to the physical features of the Navajo landscapes, and helps the students to understand the geological features, vegetative populations, and rangeland management systems common on the Navajo Nation. Learn more about Felix here.

The first two days were spent on campus here at the Dine College campus. The students were instructed on, Ethnobotany, Cartography(understanding maps), Geology, and Range Sciecne. We had both classroom instruction and hands-on training.
