Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE)

General Information

The Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) Program is funded by The National Institutes of Health. RISE is a student development program for minority-serving institutions. The goal of the program is to increase the number of students from groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research who complete Ph.D. degree programs in these fields. At Diné College, The RISE Program's primary goals and activities are:

Faculty Enhancement - Enhance faculty to incorporate research activities and findings in the classroom :
     • provide research design and proposal training
     • support research placements at universities and laboratories
     • provide support for conferences and training to increase knowledge of research in their area
     • mentor faculty in research enhancement activities that could lead to successful research proposals

Student Academic Enrichment - Improve student performance in their Math and Science coursework to increase the number of students transferring to a four-year institution
     • provide workshops and tutoring sessions in Math and Sciences
     • establish study groups
     • university site visits
     • science seminars with Native American scientists
     • year-round research projects

Student Research Experience - Increase student success with hands-on experience in research
     • prepare students for the internship experience
     • place students at a research site
     • provide laboratory training
     • promote student self-reflection and family support

Community Research Conference and Seminar - Inform Navajo communities about current college research
     • provide a community-based forum for students and faculty to share research with community
     • provide on-going dialogue with community members about research issues
