In 2012 several Student Services staff came together and applied for the Title III Grant, which is under the Department of Education with the federal government. Within the grant there were multiple target initiatives to support students to improve retention and graduation rates. One grant initiative under academic advising, was to start a Peer Mentor program to help incoming freshman make the transition from high school to college. There was a vision that students would become role models and student leaders at Diné College, they envisioned peer mentors to support students perceived as needed. Five years later, we are proud to state that the Peer Mentor program was officially established in the spring of 2017. The vision of developing student leaders to support freshman students is now a reality.
What is Mentoring
Mentoring is a process in which an experienced individual encourages another person to develop his or her goals and skills through a series of time-limited, confidential, one-on-one conversations and other learning activities. Mentors also draw benefits from the mentoring relationship. As a mentor, you will have the opportunity to share your wisdom and experiences, evolve your own thinking, develop a new mentoring relationship, and deepen your skills as a mentor.
What is a Peer Mentor
A Peer Mentor is a fellow student who serves as a role model, a resource, a supporter, and a referral service which compliments the existing support a system at the Student Success Center. Peer Mentors use their past experiences of once being new college students to inspire and guide their mentees to become successful in their academic careers. Peer Mentors are trained to adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Family Educational and Privacy Act (FERPA) which entails exercising confidentially and privacy when interacting one on one with mentees or handling any sensitive student information.
Peer Mentor Program Applications will be available after October 16, 2017 for those who are interested in becoming our mentees.
