Who Am I?I was born in Ft Lauderdale, Florida on the edge of the Everglades a long time ago. Santa used to come to our house on an airboat! My mother was born in southern Wisconsin (Clinton), her mother was born in Denmark and emigrated to the United States. Her father’s family came to the New World in the 1630s. My father was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, his mother was born in Berne, Switzerland and moved to the United States in the 1890s. His father’s family came to the New World in the 1740s after the Scots were defeated at the Battle of Colloden and their uncle beheaded in the Tower of London.

Both my mother and father were raised on farms, my dad went to college on a sheep judging scholarship and slept in the sheep barns throughout his undergraduate career at the University of Wisconsin in the 1930s! He continued with his studies and received his Ph.D. in Agronomy and Soils in 1937. He and my mother moved to the Everglades in 1938.

I received my Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Florida, having studied and published numerous papers on the effect of insulin in cultured neuronal and glial cells. After graduate school I did postdoctoral training at Yale, University of Massachusetts and Sloan Kettering Institute in NYC under Joan Massague’ studying Transforming Growth Factor- Beta and growth inhibition. Subsequently, I established a lab at the University of Minnesota, where I continued my research and developed a method to identify growth inhibited cells and genes that act as dominant suppressors of cell cycle.

Since 2017 I have taught at Dine College in beautiful Tsaile, Arizona in the Four Corners region. I teach Anatomy and Physiology for majors and non-majors and upper division courses in Cell and Molecular Biology. I am the advisor of the pre-professional club and am involved in collaborative research and training projects with the University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Dr. Shazia Tabassum Hakim is a Microbiologist/ Biologist with expertise in Public health services, Research, Academics, Diagnostics, Molecular biology & Cell culture techniques. She has more than 19 years of bench experience at numerous Clinical/ Diagnostic & Research laboratories of Pakistan & US (particularly as Microbiologist & Serologist). She also served as Professor, Chairperson, and Dean Faculty of Science & Research at Jinnah University for Women, Karachi, Pakistan, Director Allied Health Science at Canadian Academy of Health Professionals, Toronto, Canada, and Lead Instructor, Med. Laboratory Science Program, Oxford College of Arts, Business and Technology, Scarborough, Canada.
She has Educational qualifications and certifications in Medical Laboratory Technology, Microbiology, Biosafety, Clinical Research and Scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) in Microbiology from American Society for Microbiology, Canadian College of Microbiologists, Claflin University, USA, University of Minnesota Duluth and University of Karachi, Pakistan.
With a proven commitment to high academic and organizational standards/ exemplary program quality/ implementing appropriate information; she is continuously involved in coordinating and reviewing technical/ research projects; job task planning, communication & train fellow colleagues, junior staff and youth to enhance the overall applied learning experience.
Dr. Hakim’s research interests includes environmental health (water contamination), Search for new antibiotics (soil bacteria), drug design and discovery for the treatment of infections caused by MDROs (multi drug resistant organisms) using latest available models including microRNAs replacement technology, and application of quantitative analytic methods towards innovative approaches for the improvement of human health.

Dr. Makeyev joined Diné College in 2014, after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI. Dr. Makeyev’s broad research interests include development and application of mathematics and statistics based signal processing and pattern recognition methods to engineering problems with an emphasis on biomedical engineering and neuroengineering. Dr. Makeyev authored and co-authored 83 scientific publications including 36 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 41 papers in proceedings of international conferences, and 6 book chapters. This includes first or sole author papers in good impact factor journals including Neurocomputing, Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, Measurement, Sensors, Applied Sciences, Biomedical Engineering Online, and IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering. Dr. Makeyev answered unsolicited requests to review the work of others that included good impact factor journals including IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, Neural Networks, Pattern Recognition Letters, IEEE Sensors Journal, Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, Sensors, Brain Research, Measurement, and Biomedical Engineering Online as well as research funding proposals nationally and internationally and serves as an Associate Editor of the Brain Imaging and Stimulation section of Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. In 2017, in recognition of his significant professional technical accomplishments, Dr. Makeyev has been elevated to the rank of a Senior Member of the IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization. Dr. Makeyev has been working with the concentric ring electrode technology for more than 13 years (9 of them at Diné College), holds one issued and two pending utility patents related to this technology, and strongly believes in it becoming the new clinical standard for noninvasive electrophysiological measurement thanks to its critical advantages over conventional disc electrodes.
