Diné College Collaborates with Arizona Motor Vehicle Division to Release Commemorative License Plates

13 July 2023

TSAILE, AZ — Diné College, a prominent institution of higher education serving the Navajo Nation and surrounding communities, is proud to announce its recent collaboration with the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) to release a limited-edition series of commemorative license plates. This groundbreaking partnership aims to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Navajo people while promoting education and supporting the college’s mission.

In 2022, the AZ State legislature passed HB2532 tribally accredited educational institution; plates that will allow for AZ-registered vehicle drivers the option to have a Diné College plate. The Diné College Office of the President has been working closely with AZ Department of Transportation to finalize the artwork and design of the plate with the final plate design being approved by the AZ Department of Transportation board on May 25, 2023.

The new Diné College license plates are a unique representation of the college’s commitment to empowering Navajo students and promoting the values of education within their communities. Featuring a stunning design that incorporates traditional Navajo symbols and motifs, the license plates serve as a distinctive testament to the importance of education and cultural pride.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division to release these special license plates,” said Dr. Charles “Monty” Roessel, President of Diné College. “By displaying these plates on their vehicles, our students, alumni, and supporters can proudly showcase their commitment to education and their connection to the Navajo Nation.”

The collaboration between Diné College and the Arizona MVD signifies a significant milestone in the promotion of education and cultural representation within the state. The license plates will not only raise awareness about the college but also provide financial support for scholarships and academic programs at Diné College. A portion of the proceeds from each license plate sold will directly contribute to these initiatives, assisting students in their pursuit of higher education.

Individuals interested in acquiring the special edition Diné College license plates can visit the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division website or local MVD offices throughout the state. The plates will be available for purchase starting Thursday, July 13, 2023 and will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We encourage all Navajo Nation members, Diné College supporters, and those who value education and cultural heritage to consider purchasing these special license plates,” stated Dr. Roessel. “Your support will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and contribute to the continued success of Diné College.”

Diné College is recognized for its commitment to providing quality education rooted in Navajo cultural values. By partnering with the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division, the college reinforces its dedication to fostering educational opportunities and preserving the rich traditions of the Navajo people.
