TSAILE, Ariz. — A popular instructor and friend to many of Diné College’s faculty members and administrative employees passed away Feb. 17. Sheila White, a Kayenta, Ariz., native and Associate Professor of English at the Tsaile main campus, was a teacher at the college since 2009.
“It’s very difficult when one of our own leaves us too early,” said Diné College President Charles “Monty” Roessel. “Speaking on behalf of the entire Diné College community, we offer our condolences to Sheila’s family.”
“The Faculty Association of Diné College would like to express its deep-felt condolences to the family of Sheila White and the School of Arts and Humanities and English,” said Dr. Angel DeSoto, Faculty chairman. White was the former faculty chairwoman at the college in the Humanities and Fine Arts Department. The department was later renamed.
DeSoto said that during an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Association and with senior faculty members of Diné College, a unanimous decision was made to recommend the promotion of Sheila White to Distinguished Associate Professor Emeritus with due honors.
Ms. White will be laid to rest on Feb. 23, 2021, in Kayenta, Ariz. The family is also accepting donations and more details will be made public as they come in. White held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University. She taught literature and remedial courses at Diné College.
The cause of death is not related to Covid-19, college officials said.
