Associate of Science in Mathematics

PROGRAM MISSION

 

Mission- To prepare students for successful careers in the field of computer and information technology

Diné College’s Associates Degree in Mathematics is designed to provide students with the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge that include the ability to apply mathematical principles competently, think critically and creatively, understand abstract concepts, and use technology to ensure the well-being of the Diné People. The purpose of Associates Degree in Mathematics curriculum is to enable students to pursue their academic and professional aspirations with experiences that consider state of the art mathematical views. They will be prepared to pursue employment or further studies in fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, or engineering at a four-year institution.

PROGRAM GOALS

 

Program Goal-Students are to master computer programming by Web Design/Applications, Hardware, and Computer Network.

1.  Problem solving and critical reasoning.

2.  Appreciation for mathematics and its applications to real world problems. 

3. Communicate mathematical ideas with confidence

Graph Functions: Students will graph functions 

a.Sketch the graphs of linear, higher-order polynomial, rational, absolute value, exponential, logarithmic, and radical functions.

b.Sketch a graph using point plotting and analysis techniques, including basic transformations of functions such as horizontal and vertical shifts, reflections, stretches, and compressions.

c.Determine the vertex, axis of symmetry, maximum or minimum, and intercepts of a quadratic equation.

Solve Various Kinds of Equations: Students will solve various kinds of equations.

a.Solve quadratic equations using factoring, completing the squares, the square root method, and quadratic formula.

b.Solve exponential and logarithmic equations.

c.Solve differential equations

d.Solve systems of two or three linear equations

Perform Operations on Functions: Students will demonstrate the use of function notation and perform operations on functions.

a.Find the value of a function for a given domain value

b.Add, subtract, multiply, divide and compose functions.

c.Determine the inverse of a function.

d.Compute the difference quotient for a function.

e.Correctly use function notation and vocabulary related to functions, i.e. domain, range, independent variable, of, even symmetry, etc.

Display, Analyze, and Interpret Data: Students will display, analyze, and interpret data.

Demonstrate Knowledge of Problem-Solving Strategies: Students will demonstrate knowledge of problem-solving strategies.

Construct Valid Mathematical Explanations: Students will construct valid mathematical explanations.

Display an Understanding of the Development of Mathematics: Students will display an understanding of the development of mathematics. 

Demonstrate Appreciation for the Beauty of Mathematics: Students will demonstrate an appreciation for the extent, application, and beauty of mathematics.

Apply Calculus to Real World Problems: Students will apply calculus concepts and methods to real world problems. Methods covered will include limits and continuity, differentiation and integration in one and several variables, parametric equations, polar equations, sequences, series, vectors.
