The Diné College Adult Education Program operates at two locations: one in Shiprock, New Mexico, and another in Crownpoint, New Mexico.The Diné College Adult Education Program offers free academic classes to adults who desire attaining their high school diplomas. The Program offers classes to help students prepare for the Official HiSET®, which is one of three high school equivalency tests. Academic classes include: reading, writing, science, social studies, and mathematics.

Admission Information

  • Step 1: Complete application. Note: Students under the age of 18 must complete an Underage Verification Form that is signed by the parent/guardian and returned to the Adult Education Program.
  • Step 2: Complete TABE 13/14 preassessment in Reading, Language, and Mathematics
  • Step 3: Attend MANDATORY new student orientation before classes begin. If you do not attend new student orientation, you will not be able to start classes, you must wait for the next orientation date.

If you have a documented disability please notify the office and provide documentation at the time of enrollment.

The Adult Education Program is funded by the United States Department of Education through the New Mexico Higher Education Department, Adult Education Division.

HISET® Official Exam

HiSET® is an official high school equivalency credential exam that is offered in the state of New Mexico. You can register and schedule for the official exam at www.hiset.ets.org. You must use a Credit/Debit card to pay for your exams. If you have a documented disability and need testing accommodations, please notify the HiSET® company and complete the accommodations form from the website www.hiset.ets.org. Approval for accommodations may take 6 weeks or longer before you can take the HiSET® exam.

Transcripts and Diplomas

  • New Mexico GED® or HISET® Transcripts and Diplomas must be requested through www.diplomasender.com. Transcripts cost $23.00 each. You can also request for a copy of your diploma at a cost of $23.00 each. You must use a Credit/Debit card to purchase your requests. You will need to provide the following information:
    1. Your email address
    2. Date of Birth
    3. Name at the time of testing
    4. State location of testing
    5. Identification number (usually Social Security Number)
    6. Name and address of the recipient, as well as who and where the official transcript is to be sent. Usually “Official Transcript” means a formal, paper copy. Before having a transcript sent by Fax or e-mail, check with the recipient to find out if this is a valid form for them.

Jervis Garfield - Adult Education Instructor

“Jervis Garfield has worked as an adult educator for over 10 years. In this role, he has taught adult basic and secondary education. In addition, he advocates for instilling confidence and skills to students to complete their coursework and program successfully so they are able to achieve their goals.

Outside of work, he loves to spend his time with his wife and children. He loves to travel, hike, and bike. His favourite foods are turkey (with all the trimmings), burgers, and pizza (without the pineapples). He looks forwards to continuing to serve the adult education community, fueled by God’s grace and a good cup of coffee.

Tomasina Begay - Program Coordinator

Yá’át’ééh. Tódik’ozhi nishłi, Táchii’nii bashishchiin, Oozéí Táchii’nii dashicheii, Tó’aheedlíinii dashinalí. My educational background includes an A.A. degree in Business Administration from Diné College and a B.A. degree in Bi-Cultural Studies from Fort Lewis College.

Tomasina is responsible for improving the quality of the education in the overall AE program to meet the NM WIOA/NMAEA goals, as well as, working with AE instructors to engage, encourage and educate students to reach their HSE educational goal.

Yá’át’ééh, Táchii’nii nishłi, Tódik’ozhi bashishchiin, Tó’aheedlíinii dashicheii, Nakaii dine’e dashinalí. I’ve been with college for about 17 years. I received my A.A. degree in Business Administration, A.A.S. in Office Administration, & Certificate in Office Technology from Dine College.

As an Office Coordinator, I handle the enrollment process for those students who want to enroll into the program. I enjoy meeting new students and helping them get their high school diploma. It’s a great feeling when students receive their high school diploma and knowing that you had a part in their success.
