A.A. Social Work

This program provides the skills and knowledge needed to become a technician or paraprofessional in a social welfare program. Students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university should check with that institution before selecting their Social Work courses.

PROGRAM MISSION

 

The Mission of the Social Work program is to teach and explore social work principles related to the individual, the family, community and region. Classes will look at gaps in social welfare programs both on and off the Navajo Nation while comparing and contrasting traditional verses western models. Emphasis will be placed on self-reflection connected to the ability to deal with crisis intervention, trauma, confidentiality, compassion fatigue and diversity.

PROGRAM GOALS

 
  • #1 Communication happens in many ways and the foundation of good communication in the classroom comes from observation and listening. Students in social work classes will be introduced to the nuances of working with families and communities by modeling group interaction, role play and presentation of research
  • #2 Students are encouraged to look at the foundations of social work through the lens of many disciplines that helped to shape social welfare policy.

  • Students will demonstrate excellence in oral and written communication skills.
  • Students will be able to develop a foundation in social work based on the nine core competencies of Social Work.
  • Students will formulate strategies to promote mental health and social welfare based on Navajo and Western Social Work approaches.
  • Students will develop a framework of viewing a person and society from the lens of a Social Worker.
  • Student will understand the legal and ethical standards relating to the field of Social Work.
