Diné College Enriches Shiprock Campus and Crownpoint Center with New Mexico Art in Public Places Program

Shiprock, NM. Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Diné College is proud to announce the successful installation of new artwork at the Shiprock Branch Campus and Crownpoint Center, an initiative made possible through funding from the New Mexico Art in Public Places Program.

The project, which awarded more than $150,000 to the College over several years, was designed to enhance the campus environment and create a greater sense of community and belonging for students and staff. Selection committees, composed of dedicated College staff and community members, worked diligently to choose pieces from a catalog of work by artists across the state.

“We are very pleased to have such eloquent and refined pieces on our branch campus and center,” said Winifred Jumbo, Director of External Campuses and Sites. “The committees worked tirelessly to ensure that each piece was thoughtfully selected and secured at its new home. This initiative ensures a quality space both indoors and outdoors, and our overall goal is to ensure our students feel a sense of belonging within their community. What better way to celebrate this than through art?”

At the Shiprock Branch Campus, five pieces of art were installed. Two pieces, includes a striking sculpture and a metal art piece, which are now featured in the front entryway, welcoming visitors and students. The Senator John Pinto Library now houses three new paintings by talented artists, adding to the cultural richness of the space.

The Crownpoint Center has also received three new pieces, now displayed in its lobby and common areas, featuring work from two different artists.

Diné College extends its gratitude to New Mexico Arts Department of Cultural Affairs and all the artists involved for their contributions to this transformative project. The College is excited to share this new collection with students, faculty, and the public and hopes the artworks will be enjoyed by all.

Featured artists include: Jerry Brown (The Race), Donna Jean Jawrunner (Sun Lion), Sage Eriacho (Miracle Mindset), Melanie Yazzie & The Gallery Wall, Inc. (Making New Friends), Roberta Begaye (Wide Ruins), Garrett Etsitty (War Paint Horse), and Deborah Jojola (Unbalance)
