Diné College Hosts Chinle High School Students for Educational Campus Tour
June 19, 2025
TSAILE, Ariz. Diné College welcomed 55 Chinle High School students, along with three chaperones and a bus driver, for an immersive tour of the campus this week. The visit was part of an ongoing collaboration between Diné College and Chinle High School, aimed at introducing students to higher education opportunities and the benefits of the dual credit program.
“So today, we have a Chinle High School college tour,” said Francetta Begaye, Dual Credit Program Director at Diné College. “We are showing them what our college offers, the different opportunities and resources available, and encouraging them to think about their educational journeys. Diné College is here, close to home, with the support and resources they need to get started.”
The tour included stops at various departments, with students exploring facilities such as the museum, radio station, library, and the GCB building. Participants also had the opportunity to meet faculty and staff, explore various academic programs, and enjoy a meal on campus. The event aimed to familiarize students, ranging from freshmen to juniors, with the college environment and help them plan for their futures.
Dr. Kenneth Sanford, a counselor at Chinle High School, emphasized the importance of the dual credit program in preparing students for college. “This program allows our students to earn college credits while still in high school. It opens doors to quality education and helps them get a head start on their degree. Diné College has been incredibly professional and supportive in working with our students,” Sanford said.
Currently in its second year, the partnership between Diné College and Chinle High School offers courses in Navajo language and fine arts, among others. The program aims to grow further, with more students expected to register in the coming semesters. Tuition, fees, and books are fully covered by the state of Arizona, providing significant financial relief for participating families.
The success of the college tour was made possible through extensive collaboration and teamwork among the Diné College staff. The college expressed gratitude to all presenters who provided valuable information to the students. It acknowledged the significant contributions of the Department of Transformation, represented by Lori Tso and Richelle Begay, and the Recruitment team, led by Jonie Thompson, in organizing and leading detailed campus tours. Their dedication played a pivotal role in creating a meaningful experience for the visiting students.
“We work closely with counselors to help students align their academic goals with our offerings,” Begaye added. “By providing general education courses, including math, English, and science, we help them become college-ready and set them up for success. This program is especially vital for our Native students in rural areas who may not have considered college as an option before.”
Sanford expressed gratitude for the collaboration and its impact on students. “I’ve been at Chinle High School for over 35 years, and I’ve seen the difference these opportunities make. Providing students with access to college experiences and resources inspires them to dream bigger and pursue their goals,” he said.
The ongoing partnership is expected to continue expanding, with efforts to increase awareness among parents and the community about the opportunities available through the program.
