NAVAJO TRIBAL PARK, AZ, Feb. 28, 2026. Seven student athletes from Diné College successfully competed in the Monument Valley Half Marathon today, showcasing their preparation and endurance in the challenging desert terrain. The event, organized by NavajoYES, featured a 50K, a Half Marathon, and a new 4-miler.
The runners demonstrated remarkable performance across the different race categories. In the Half Marathon, Alonzo Bahe finished in second place, and Chadwin Sells placed third. For the new four-miler, Willson Atene placed 10th overall out of 84 runners. Their participation highlights the college’s commitment to student wellness and athletic achievement.
The event began with the 50K race at 7:00 a.m., followed by the Half Marathon at 9:00 a.m., drawing participants to the scenic trails of the Navajo Tribal Park.
Residence Life Coordinator Tanaya Belone praised the students for their dedication and strong finish. “I believe the students did really well on their run. They were well prepared,” Belone said. She noted that many were new to the course, which made their accomplishment even more significant. “I’m glad that they did it, and I’m also happy that they finished it without dropping out at the very end.”
Belone expressed excitement about the unexpected results and the students’ ability to adapt to the trail. She highlighted the performance in the half-marathon and the quick pace of the new four-mile race. “I’m looking forward to more races with them,” she added, optimistic about their future competitive placements.
Of the seven runners who attended, one participated with her family despite not feeling well, demonstrating the team’s supportive spirit.
