SHIPROCK, N.M. Diné College demonstrated an impressive presence at the 2025 Shiprock Marathon, held May 2-3 at the Shiprock Youth Center in Shiprock, Navajo Nation. Students and staff participated in both the 5K and Half Marathon events, earning outstanding achievements.
The marathon, a USA Track & Field (USATF)-certified race, draws participants from across the region. The Half Marathon, held on Saturday, featured a demanding course with an elevation gain of approximately 255 meters (836.61 feet) and offered sweeping views of the iconic Shiprock Pinnacle, known in Diné as Tsé Bit’a’í or “Rock with Wings.” The 5K took place on Friday, showcasing a shorter but equally community-driven course.
Jackie Frank stood out in the Half Marathon, securing 16th place overall and 3rd in his age division. Marty Benally, a representative of Diné College’s Shiprock Campus, also delivered a strong performance, finishing 99th overall and 5th in his age division.
Exceptional results extended to the 5K, where Tseligai Homes placed 5th overall and clinched 1st in his age division. Participation was robust, with eight Diné College students and two staff members competing in the 5K and an additional ten students representing the college in the Half Marathon.
The event provided an opportunity for connection and community engagement alongside competition. “It was fun both days,” said Sharon Begay. “On Saturday, we had the students who ran the 5K come out and cheer for the half-marathon runners.”
The marathon weekend offered more than just racing. It facilitated connection with the local community and appreciation for the scenic Navajo Nation landscape.
