Diné College AGR 301 Students Learned Traditional Navajo Butchering Skills in Hands-On Class Event

TSAILE, Ariz., May 5, 2026. Diné College AGR 301 Meat Science students recently took part in a hands-on butchering event in Tsaile, Arizona, where they learned traditional Navajo meat processing techniques as part of their final class activities. The event gave students practical experience in meat cutting, teamwork, and applying classroom lessons to cultural knowledge and local food systems.

Throughout the semester, students studied animal species, meat cuts, and livestock processing methods. During the event, they put those lessons into practice by learning Navajo butchering methods and preparing meat for different dishes. Benita Litson, director of the Land Grant Office, said the event helped students build skill and confidence while connecting them to traditional practices. Land Grant student intern Dayhenoa Yazzie also guided students through the process, sharing knowledge passed down through her family. Student Liah Frank said the course brought together hands-on learning, culture, and teamwork.

College leaders said the activity reflects Diné College’s mission to connect education, culture, and practical life skills for Navajo communities.
